Delegation from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha Meets Union Home Minister

A delegation comprising Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Founding President Mr. Bimal Gurung, General Secretary Mr. Roshan Giri, and Member of Parliament from Darjeeling, Mr. Raju Bista, met with the Hon’ble Union Home Minister, Mr. Amit Shah, at his office in the Lok Sabha complex today. The meeting focused on seeking a permanent and constitutional resolution to the long-standing issues concerning the Darjeeling Hills, Terai, and Dooars regions.
During the meeting, the GJM leadership submitted a memorandum formally reiterating their demand for the creation of a separate state of Gorkhaland or, alternatively, Union Territory status to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region.
The Hon’ble Home Minister informed the delegation that the Government of India has already initiated steps toward resolving the long-pending issues of the Gorkha community. He highlighted the appointment of an Interlocutor to examine matters related to Darjeeling, Terai, and Dooars, and noted that the process is currently underway. The Home Minister further stated that upon submission of the Interlocutor’s final report, the Government of India will consider and implement the most appropriate constitutional framework in the best interest of the region.
Additionally, he reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to granting Scheduled Tribe status to the 11 concerned communities, emphasizing the Centre’s dedication to addressing their long-standing demands.
