Electoral Performance
GJM has allied variably for leverage:
- 2009 Lok Sabha: Supported BJP’s Jaswant Singh (won Darjeeling).
- 2011 Assembly: Won 3 hill seats (Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong) and influenced 1 Dooars seat.
- 2014 Lok Sabha: Backed BJP’s S.S. Ahluwalia (won).
- 2017 GTA Elections: Boycotted amid unrest.
- 2019 Lok Sabha: Gurung faction supported BJP’s Raju Bista (won).
- 2021 Assembly: TMC allotted 3 seats; factions split votes, with Tamang’s winning 1 (Darjeeling).
- 2022 GTA Elections: BGPM (Thapa) won all 45 seats unopposed after GJM boycott. Currently holds 0/294 seats in West Bengal Assembly. Alliances: NDA (2009–2020, 2024–present), TMC (2020–2022). Major Events and Agitations
- 2008: Anti-Sixth Schedule protests; Ghisingh ousted.
- 2010: Madan Tamang murder (suspected GJM links, leading to resignations).
- 2013–2017: Telangana-inspired strikes; 2017 violence (curfew, internet blackout).
- 2019: Clashes during police operations; 2 officers killed.
- 2020–2021: Alliance shifts; cases against Gurung withdrawn.
Current Status (as of December 2025)
GJM remains active but faces challenges from BGPM’s TMC dominance in GTA. It welcomed the Union government’s appointment of an interlocutor for tripartite talks on Gorkhaland in October 2025, viewing it as a step toward a “permanent political solution.” An all-party meeting convened by Gurung on November 9, 2025, resolved to raise the demand before the interlocutor, though a follow-up on November 10 saw poor turnout and wrapped up quickly. The party is reviving grassroots committees ahead of 2026 GTA elections, focusing on stable representation and negotiations with the state. On October 7, 2025, GJM celebrated its 18th foundation day with Gurung emphasizing BJP’s need to “repay Gorkhas’ trust.” An organizational meeting of the Central Committee occurred on November 3, 2025, in Kalimpong. GJM supports NDA nationally but prioritizes hill interests without aggressive Gorkhaland rhetoric, amid ongoing ST status advocacy.
GJM was founded on October 7, 2007, by Bimal Gurung, a former councillor of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) under the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF).
